Zotero is a project of the Corporation for Digital Scholarship and the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media (part of the Department of History and Art History at George Mason University). It was initially funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

Brief History:

  • The first release of Zotero became available in October 2006.
  • Zotero was first created as an add-on for the Firefox web browser, taking advantage of its open source software.
  • In 2011, support for Chrome and Safari was added.
  • In July 2017, Zotero Connector (Zotero 5.0) was released, which replaced the Firefox add-on and updated the connectors for Chrome and Safari.
