The National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Report presents trends for measures related to access to care, affordable care, care coordination, effective treatment, healthy living, patient safety, and person-centered care. The report presents, in chart form, the latest available findings on quality of and access to healthcare, as well as disparities related to race and ethnicity, income, and other social determinants of health.

Directs the scientific review process for grants and contracts, manages Agency research training programs, evaluates the scientific contribution of proposed and ongoing research and demonstrations; and supports and conducts health services research on priority populations.

Since 2011, the CDC Health Disparities and Inequalities Reports (CHDIR) and the Strategies for Reducing Health Disparities reports have highlighted effective public health programs that have reduced disparities.

The CMS Office of Minority Health offers a comprehensive source of information on eliminating health disparities and improving the health of all minority populations, like racial and ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, and rural populations.

Health disparities are health differences between different groups of people. These health differences may include: how many people get certain diseases; how severe the diseases are; how many people have complications because of the diseases; how many people die from a disease; whether people can get health care; how many people get screened for a disease.

The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) is one of the 27 Institutes and Centers of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the nation's premiere medical research agency. NIMHD's work touches the lives of millions of Americans burdened by disparities in health status and health care delivery, including racial and ethnic minority groups, rural populations, populations with low socioeconomic status, and other population groups.

The Office for Disparities Research and Workforce Diversity (ODWD) coordinates two significant priorities at NIMH: 1) reduce mental health disparities and promote equity both within and outside of the United States and 2) further efforts to diversify the mental health research workforce. Equitable access to high-quality care for all Veterans is a major tenet of the VA healthcare mission. The Office of Health Equity (OHE) champions the elimination of health disparities and achieving health equity for all Veterans. OHE supports the VHA's vision to provide appropriate individualized health care to each Veteran in a way that eliminates disparate health outcomes and assures health equity.

Minority populations often face barriers to health in their everyday lives, such as food insecurity, housing instability, transportation challenges and a lack of employment opportunities. These factors are referred to as social determinants of health: the social, economic, and physical conditions in the environments where people live, work, and play.

In partnership with OHE [Office of Health Equity], the American Journal of Public Health (AJPH) is maintaining a collection of AJPH articles and related VA resources that address health disparities among vulnerable Veterans. This effort stems from the VA Health Equity Supplement published by AJPH in August of 2014.
